Summary of evidence Radiocarbon Dating Age: 5000 year before the present What era: Neolithic Sample from: 2.5m to 3.5m     Sediments Very soft light grey clayey silt. Frequent fine rooting and areas of frequent bivalves.  Pollen Changing oak mixed woodland (no lime) with charcoal as evidence of clearance by fire  Foraminifera &            Ostracods N/A  Diatoms Marine  Molluscs Broken marine burrowing bivalves with a few snails.

Putting the evidence together The coastal margins were fringed with oak woodland more or less continuously for thousands of years
