News & Press Releases
East Head is a sand and shingle spit located at the mouth of Chichester Harbour. It was formed by the process of longshore drift, but its present shape and orientation have been affected by sea defences that have been interrupting this process for more than 100 years.
East Head is one of only two sand dune systems on the Sussex coast and has its own unique sand dune habitat that is of high conservation value.
The spit gives Chichester Harbour some physical protection from waves arriving from the open sea, particularly the exposed western shoreline. It is also is a very popular place for people to visit during the summer
