Field trips

Guided field trips are available at any time in Chichester Harbour
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

A team of qualified teachers offers individually planned field trips for all ages, linked to any curriculum focus in a range of harbour locations.

A modern and fully-equipped classroom at Dell Quay is available as a base for field trips and can accommodate groups of up to forty pupils or students. The Solar Boat can accommodate up to 50 passengers.

This year Chichester Harbour Conservancy Education Service has hosted a wide variety of different groups with an almost equally wide variety of interests. We have had infant school classes and university students, home education groups and environmental art studies, GCSE and A-level science and geography as well as pupils from special schools.

For more details on how a visit to the harbour can tie in with the National Curriculum, look at Curriculum Opportunities. The most common areas are geography, science, history, art and citizenship.

Some of the more popular trips are described below and you can download examples of programmes. Our programmes have to allow for the tide – the beach or saltmarsh may be awash or East Head almost inaccessible at high spring tides. The programme for the day will take this into account.

Key stage 1 & 2

Creatures in the environment, animals in habitats.

Walking through Reeds
Fishbourne Meadows and Dell Quay provide an exciting contrast with an easy and enjoyable walk between the two sites. Stream dipping and ‘bug’ catching in Fishbourne Meadows is always great fun and very educational – as is the investigation of the muddy shoreline at Dell Quay with its ‘sand spaghetti’ created by lugworms, seaweed, shells and scuttling crabs.

Key Stage 2 & 3

Impact of humans on the environment, coastal processes and erosion, harbour management.

Chichester Marina provides a startling contrast with its hundreds of shiny boats neatly parked in rows against a backdrop of reed beds or open water. The lock gates can often be seen in action and Chichester Canal is another example of human engineering. From the marina there is an enjoyable walk to Dell Quay, through traditionally coppiced woodland and along the shoreline. With the prospect of finds of Stone Age flints and Roman pottery, there is plenty of scope for the imagination and topics for discussion.

GCSE and ‘A’ level Geography

East Head is geography and environmental management in action.

East Head
The recent dramatic changes to this sandy spit make it an ideal place to visit to see coastal processes actually happening and to appreciate the dilemma between balancing the needs of people against the inevitable forces of nature. It provides a safe environment for practicing fieldwork techniques, such as transects, quadrats, measurement of slope and gradation of pebbles up the beach.

‘A’ level Biology

Again East Head provides a great opportunity for studying succession across the sand dunes as well as studying and identifying the indigenous fauna and flora.

However, Dell Quay shoreline has plenty of interest and a classroom to use for setting up experiments, writing up field notes or identifying finds using microscopes.
