Swimmers Rescued

Chichester Harbour Conservancy’s patrol team responded swiftly to an emergency call on Sunday afternoon. A group of swimmers had got into difficulty off Eaststoke Point on Hayling Island, and the Hayling Island Lifeboat had been called. The patrol team were nearby, and responded immediately with two vessels along with Hayling Rescue. They reached a pair of swimmers in deep water who then also directed them to a single swimmer, in extreme difficulty, who had been swept even further from the shore. One boat rescued a 10yr old girl and the second took a 13yr old boy and a 64yr old man on board. All three swimmers were then taken to Hayling Island Lifeboat Station for treatment.

Richard Craven, Harbour Master said “It was lucky that the Patrol Team were on hand to respond to this emergency so quickly. Swimmers can get in to trouble extremely fast as the tide and currents can be treacherous, particularly at the Harbour entrance. For your own safety, please swim only in designated areas.”
