Chichester Harbour Conservancy - Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Celebrating 40 years of Chichester Harbour Conservancy 1971 - 2011

We have a number of exciting projects to celebrate 40 years since the inception by Act of Parliament of Chichester Harbour Conservancy.

My Chichester Harbour
A community web-based project www.mychichesterharbour.co.uk. We have added hundreds of stories from the last 40 years and now need you to add your stories and memories. It may be the story of your first experience in a boat, a great day out fishing, an unusual bird you saw, or even an extreme weather event such as the great freeze in the '60s or the storms in the '80s. You can add your story along with photos and video if you have them.

There are two easy ways to get involved:

  1. Simply go to www.mychichesterharbour.co.uk and follow the easy instructions to add your story or memory along with photos or video
  2. Email your story and photo to Ali Beckett or call 01243 512301

40 Oaks for 40 Years
Throughout the year we will be looking for sites for 40 oak trees to be planted within Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Please read through the project leaflet and then contact us if you think you may have a suitable site for an oak within the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

40 Years Exhibition

A fascinating exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of Chichester Harbour Conservancy was held in September at Emsworth Museum.

Established by Act of Parliament in 1971, Chichester Harbour Conservancy was set up after pressure from local residents and users of the harbour. Uniquely the Conservancy was given powers as both the harbour authority and management body for the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The exhibition looked back at our first 40 years and the range of work undertaken by the Conservancy. Large display panels and objects show key moments in our history on themes such as Wildlife, Access, Communication, Facilities for Yachtsmen and Harbour Patrol.
