Respect the landscape, wildlife and heritage of Chichester Harbour

When visiting the harbour, please keep to the designated footpaths. Walking off the paths can be very damaging to habitats. Keep you dog under control all the time, dogs can cause unnecessary disturbance to wildlife and habitats.

Raise your awareness of the local environment

Take time to learn more about this unique Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There is lots of information on this website and various publications are available from the Harbour Office. Join one of the guided walks or activities to learn more in an informal and fun way.

Litter and Recycling

Please don’t leave litter, it is unsightly and can be damaging to wildlife. Use waste and recycling facilities. Ask at the Harbour Office for your free onboard recycling bag. Take your own shopping bag with you rather than taking more carrier bags. Re-use plastic bags and wrappers if possible. Compost or shred garden rubbish rather than burning it. Bonfires in harbourside properties must not be on the foreshore.

Sustainable Transport

Walk, cycle, take the bus or car share and reduce your impact on the environment. Use the Salterns Way cycle route to reach the eastern side of the harbour.

Buy locally produced goods and foods

Use local farm shops and craft centres. Many restaurants and cafes promote local, seasonal produce – if you are not sure where something has come from, ask. Local fish can be bought from the fish shop at East Wittering. See www.fishonline.org for a list of fish to eat and fish to avoid.

Follow the Countryside Code, it is good for you and good for the countryside.

Conserve Energy and Water

Take a trip on the solar powered boat Solar Heritage for an environmental view of the harbour. Be energy aware in all your activities. The more water taken out upstream means less freshwater comes into the harbour which is bad for birds and other wildlife. Use environmentally friendly cleaning products that have a minimum impact on aquatic life.
