Team Teacher

We would like to appoint two Team Teachers to join our staff at our Education Centre in Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  This is an opportunity to teach in one of the country’s most beautiful landscapes and share your knowledge and passion for wildlife, habitats and coastal processes.

You will deliver planned sessions to supervised groups, across all educational age ranges and abilities, both in the field and in school outreach work.  You must have a keen interest in the natural environment, wildlife and outdoor education, experience in education and strong interpersonal skills.

The Education Centre is open all year but the busiest period is during the summer term and the first half of the autumn term. The post is offered on a casual basis and you would join a team of other bank staff working to meet the requirements of the service.

We are particularly looking for someone who has experience of or is willing to lead visits and activities with Secondary age students, although the job also includes working with Primary age pupils.  Applications from candidates with experience of leading ecology and/or geography field trips would be welcomed although this is not essential.

Planning Officer

We are recruiting a Planning Officer to job share 3 days per week with our current Planning Officer working the other 2 days.

Chichester Harbour Conservancy is a non-statutory consultee for planning applications within Chichester Harbour AONB and the adjacent area.  As Planning Officer, you would advise the Conservancy on all matters relating to planning; locally and nationally, meeting the objectives of the Management Plan, and formally comment on planning consultation documents and planning applications in and around Chichester Harbour AONB.

Harbour Technician

Chichester Harbour Conservancy is the Statutory Harbour Authority for Chichester Harbour and we are recruiting for a Harbour Technician as part of our busy harbour management team.

We can offer varied and interesting work in a marine based environment using a range of skills and experience, a competitive salary, pension and generous holiday allowance.  This is a rarely available opportunity to work for a unique public body, in a collaborative working environment and an exceptionally beautiful place.

As Harbour Technician you would be maintaining, repairing and improving Conservancy vessels, moorings and infrastructure, crewing vessels as required and undertaking Patrol Officer duties on a rota during the peak sailing season.

You will require excellent communication and organisational skills and be able to work efficiently under pressure, additionally, you will have a thorough knowledge of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea, a valid driving licence and a RYA level 2 Power Boating Certificate.

Work Experience

* Please note work experience places for 2018 are now full*

The Conservancy accepts two students per year on work experience placements.  The emphasis is on education, nature conservation and harbour management. Preference will be given to students attending local schools and/or with their main residence in the Harbour area.

We can offer a maximum of one week’s work equivalent to five working days.  The period of work is likely to include the weekends on either side of the working week with equivalent time off during the  week.  Work Experience is only available between Easter and October.

Guidelines for applicants:

  • you need to be happy to work both in an office and outdoors
  • you will probably be asked to assist  with a guided walk of some distance
  • you are likely to be involved with a practical outdoor  tasks with the Rangers
  • you need appropriate outdoor gear for wet and muddy conditions and for going out on the water (a lifejacket will be supplied)
  • you will require family support with transport due to the rural locations of our offices at Itchenor and Dell Quay
  • written consent will be required from parents as placements are likely to include at least one session on the water  

Due to health and safety at work regulations not all tasks are appropriate for work experience students. 

Applications are accepted in the autumn for placements in the following year.   All suitable applications will be held on file until the last working day of January when all applications will be considered.  Successful applicants will be contacted to confirm dates.  All unsuccessful applicants will be notified.
