Chichester Harbour

A beautiful and unique protected landscape

Chichester Harbour is a thriving recreational boating harbour that is internationally recognised for its rare habitats and protected species. Stretching over 28.2 square miles, the harbour is a natural estuary in South East England.

There is a mosaic of habitats within Chichester Harbour, from the main water body, to mudflats, seagrass meadows, saltmarshes, the strandline, shingle banks, beaches, reedbeds, coastal grazing marsh, the wooded fringe, grass paddocks and the cultivated land.

Although the population relatively small at 8,700 residents, over half-a-million people live within 10km (6.2 miles) of Chichester Harbour, and many more from further afield chose the visit every year, estimated to be around 1.8 million people in total.

With 14 sailing clubs and 63 miles of footpaths, including the King Charles III England Coast Path, Chichester Harbour is popular place to live, work and enjoy. You can find out more about Chichester Harbour in our Management Plan.
