People have been living in and around Chichester Harbour for centuries and there is evidence of domestic, industrial and commercial life here. Important finds over the years include Stone Age flint tools, fire-cracked 'pot-boilers', Bronze Age artefacts, Iron Age hearths, a Roman helmet and Saxon pottery.

You can follow the history of Chichester Harbour from 450,000BC up to today here.

The Archaeology Research Framework and Uncovering the Past documents are a record of the wealth of information relating to archaeology in and around Chichester Harbour. Sections in the research framework contain detailed information on archaeological projects between 2003-2007. These important projects were undertaken as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded, Rhythms of the Tide project. Students can find more information on archaeology in the Learning Zone.

If you interested in archaeology and would like to get involved with future projects, please contact the Chichester & District Archaeology Society (CDAS).
