❗Avian Flu – Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

❗Avian Flu – Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI)❗

We have received reports of a small number of dead birds around the harbour and it is possible that this is due to avian flu. The UK Health Security Agency has said that the risk to the public from this bird flu strain is very low. It mainly affects birds.

• Do not touch or move any dead or sick wild birds.
• Dogs should be kept away from any carcasses.
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water if you touch wild bird faeces or feathers. For more advice go to the NHS website.
• If you find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, you should report them to the Defra helpline 03459 335577 or online at www.gov.uk/guidance/report-dead-wild-birds
• Defra may collect some of these birds and test them to help understand how the disease is distributed geographically and in different types of bird, not all birds will be collected. Wild birds are susceptible to a range of diseases and injuries and not all dead birds will have been infected with avian influenza.
• Where dead birds are not required for surveillance purposes it is the landowner’s responsibility to safely dispose of the carcases.

Our National Landscape Rangers and Volunteer Range

Our National Landscape Rangers and Volunteer Rangers have been hard at work to bring in the tern rafts and stowing them for the winter. Assisted by volunteers from the @chichesterharbourfriends 💪💪💪

The Common Terns that use these rafts have now flown south to sunnier climes for the winter, but it was an incredible year - the best breeding season since we first deployed the rafts in 2019. At least 75 chicks fledged this year!

These particular rafts were funded through the @chichesterharbourfriends Return of the Tern project and a grant from the @heritagefunduk - proof that targeted nature recovery really can work.

🦅Meet the Ecologist - Special Boat Trip🦅

Join our Ecologist, Pete Hughes, for this special guided boat trip. Pete has worked in Chichester Harbour for several years, and will guide you through the birdlife and habitats of this unique environment. Tens of thousands of wading birds and waterfowl arrive in the Autumn and spend the winter months in Chichester Harbour.

This special trip, timed to coincide with a rising high tide, is planned to hopefully give some spectacular views of waders such as godwits, plovers and dunlin as the birds wheel around in large flocks before settling down on higher shingle banks and islands to wait out the high tide.

Our creative workshop team have built this Disney Pixar inspired entry for The Fishbourne Scarecrow Trail.
See our scarecrow and over 80 others, on the Fishbourne ‘Magic of Disney’ Scarecrow Trail during half term until 2nd November.
Visit Fishbourne to follow the trail. Pick up a map/entry form from one of the local businesses in Fishbourne and explore the village to find the scarecrows. Guess who each scarecrow is and complete the entry form to be in with a chance of winning a prize! The event is raising funds for Fishbourne School and St Wilfrid's Hospice.
