At 28.2 square miles, the stunning natural environment of Chichester Harbour is one of the nation’s protected landscapes. It was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1964 and rebranded as a National Landscape in 2023. The National Landscape has 8,709 residents, 5,069 dwellings and over 400 businesses.

We are recruiting a National Landscape Planning Officer to job share with an existing employee on our Conservation Team. The role will provide subject matter expertise to help conserve and enhance the landscape for its natural beauty.

You will work with colleagues at Chichester Harbour Conservancy to seek to influence development applications to support the delivery of the Chichester Harbour National Landscape Management Plan (2025-2030), including its Policy Aims and Planning Principles. Your main audiences will be developers, agents acting for developers, communities in and around the National Landscape and the Local Planning Authorities. Every year we respond to around 300 planning applications.

Our role is also to ensure emerging planning policies at local and national level have the best interests of Chichester Harbour National Landscape represented.

Chichester Harbour Conservancy has a Member-led Planning Committee which is convened at least four times per year to consider applications of a strategic or controversial nature. You will be required to prepare case reports to present to the Members which will help to inform recommendations made to the Local Planning Authorities. Whilst Chichester Harbour Conservancy is a non-statutory consultee in the planning system, we are currently seeking recognition to be a statutory consultee with the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

There are 34 National Landscapes in England and Chichester Harbour Conservancy is a member of the National Landscapes Association.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a conservation body that is helping to safeguard the future of this precious landscape.

The National Landscape Planning Officer role is hosted by Chichester Harbour Conservancy and funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
