Would you like to volunteer in beautiful surroundings, alongside a skilled and friendly team? You can gain a deeper insight of Chichester Harbour waters and the work of Chichester Harbour Conservancy, by volunteering on board Solar Heritage, our solar powered tour boat.

What’s involved with volunteering?
- Meet and greet customers
- Assist the crew with managing passengers on the pontoon during embarkment and dis-embarkment
- Refreshment provision and handling of cash/card payments on board
- Deal with questions from customers in a friendly and positive manner, share local knowledge of Chichester Harbour
- Work effectively with the Skipper and Crew to ensure safe practice of the operation of ‘Solar Heritage’
- Interacting with visitors to promote trips and hand out leaflets to attract customers.
Candidate specification, skills and our expectations
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with members of the public
- Knowledge of the harbour and its surroundings
- Happy to work outdoors in varying weather conditions when the Solar Heritage operates
- Confidence to effectively interact with people of all ages including children, to ensure all passengers have a positive sailing experience
- Apply initiative and quick thinking in unexpected situations
- Team player who can make a positive contribution to the Skipper, Crew and passengers
Volunteer Commitment
- Available to volunteer on some evenings, weekends and bank holidays
- Available to volunteer for a minimum of 3 trips per month
Solar Heritage is based from Itchenor for the majority of the year but during the school Easter and Summer Holidays it departs from Emsworth. There are occasional departures from Dell Quay and Chichester Marina.
The boat trips operate all year around and the trips vary from one to three hours in duration. Sometimes, two trips take place concurrently so volunteers may be on board for longer than the single trip time.
