Chichester Harbour Conservancy is the only Statutory Harbour Authority with functions around leisure, recreation and the conservation of nature.
Managing the Harbour
Chichester Harbour Conservancy was established by the Chichester Harbour Conservancy Act 1971 and is responsible for the safety of navigation, the regulation of moorings, works and dredging, enforcement of harbour byelaws and the collection of dues and charges.
Managing the Amenity Area
Chichester Harbour Conservancy is responsible for managing the Amenity Area, which is the land directly around the harbour. The land is nationally and internationally important, with several legal protections in place to look after the landscape, the habitats and the wildlife.
Our Approach
Chichester Harbour Conservancy works with landowners and other stakeholders in matters such as nature conservation, biodiversity, public access and landscape improvements. We undertake projects to conserve and enhance natural beauty while helping visitors to learn about and value this special place.
The Members of the Conservancy are drawn from West Sussex County Council, Hampshire County Council, Chichester District Council, Havant Borough Council and the Advisory Committee. Chichester Harbour Conservancy is the de facto National Landscape Committee for Chichester Harbour.
The Chichester Harbour Management Plan 2025-2030 Incorporating the Amenity Area and Harbour is nested within our Vision to 2050.
