Tide Simulations

View the Chichester Harbour Tide Simulations

The tide simulations show the ebb and flow of the tide in Chichester Harbour. There are two scenarios - 2005 and 2050. The flows are based on predictions made using a complex mathematical model.

The first scenario is the current (2005) tidal cycle and shows the flooding and draining of the harbour at all stages of the tide. Please note that these are predictions and do not take account of variable factors such as the direction and strength of winds and waves across the harbour. However the predictions have been compared to values on the Admiralty Chart SC3418 and show a reasonable comparison.

The second scenario is the predicted tidal cycle for 2050 using a sea level rise of 0.27 meters (about the height of two steps on a staircase). We have also removed all of the most vulnerable sea walls to show the flooding effects into the adjacent fields. Please note that there are no plans to actually remove these sea walls. The simulations just show what might happen if there were no walls.

The model was developed by ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd in a project jointly funded by the Sustainable Development Fund and Heritage Lottery Fund.
